What Is Fonted? The Story Behind Our Unique Art Prints
If you’ve not come across Fonted before, the idea is quite simple. We create art prints using real letters photographed from buildings, signs, pubs, shops and other places.
Rather than creating the lettering digitally, we photograph individual letters wherever we find them and use those photographs to build words, names and phrases.
How Fonted started
Fonted began with an interest in the different types of lettering found on buildings and signs. Look closely and you’ll find letters everywhere, each with its own shape, colour, style and character.
We started photographing them and building a collection of individual letters. That collection has grown over time as we travel around the UK looking for new letters and interesting places.
Those photographs are now the starting point for every Fonted art print.
From real letters to art prints
Once we have the letters we need, we can combine them to create words and phrases.
Our collections include towns and cities, football clubs, Welsh words and phrases, Scottish designs, local sayings and much more.
We also create bespoke art prints, so customers can choose a name, word or phrase and we can build a design using letters from our collection.
The result is wall art that has a genuine connection to real places. Every letter has been photographed somewhere rather than simply selected from a computer font.
Why are the letters photographed?
That’s really what makes Fonted different.
With Fonted, every letter comes from a photograph of something we’ve actually seen.
A letter might come from an old pub sign, a shop front, a hotel, a railway station or another building. Some letters are bold and modern, others are old, faded or slightly unusual.
We don’t always know what the next letter will look like or where we’ll find it. That’s part of the process.
Creating your own Fonted
If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for in our existing collections, you can create your own bespoke Fonted print.
Names, words, phrases and special places can all be turned into artwork using letters from our photographic collection.
You can choose something personal to you, a favourite place, a family name or simply a word you like.
